Dealcoholization using membrane technology

Wafilin’s membrane systems can be used to purify the alcohol solution from beer and wine whilst maintaining the taste and product quality.

Full taste. Less alcohol.

The demand for alcohol-free beverages is growing fast. From beers to wines and ciders. Producers face a shared challenge: removing alcohol while preserving the authentic flavor and aroma that define a quality drink.

Wafilin Systems provides smart membrane solutions for efficient dealcoholization using reverse osmosis. Our technology gently separates alcohol molecules without heat, maintaining the delicate balance of taste, aroma, and mouthfeel.

Beer

Reverse osmosis removes alcohol gently, preserving the full aroma, taste, and body of premium beers.

Wine

Low-temperature filtration reduces alcohol while maintaining aroma, structure, and varietal character.

Ciders

Efficient membrane technology lowers alcohol content without losing crispness or natural fruit flavor.

Dealcoholizing beer

Membrane technology enables precise dealcoholization while preserving the full flavor profile of premium beers. Using reverse osmosis, alcohol is gently removed without heat to less than 0.05% by volume. Keeping the natural aromas, color, and mouthfeel intact. A compact, scalable solution for breweries aiming to expand into the growing alcohol-free market.

Brewery solutions

Together with Ziemann Holvrieka, we offer Elixr, a state-of-the-art membrane solution that enables breweries to produce full-flavored non-alcoholic beers efficiently and consistently.

Why choose membrane-based dealcoholization?

  • Preserve authentic flavor – Low temperature processing protects natural aroma compounds.
  • Reliable results – Alcohol content reduced to below 0.05% ABV with consistent quality.
  • Compact and scalable – Modular design fits seamlessly into existing production lines.
  • Efficient operation – Energy saving, water-efficient, and easy to integrate.

Dealcoholization of wine & ciders

For wines and ciders, balance and aroma are everything. Our membrane-based dealcoholization systems gently remove alcohol at low temperatures, protecting the natural fruit character, freshness, and mouthfeel. The result is a refined, alcohol-free drink that keeps its authentic flavor as intended by the producer.

Natural taste

With the right technology, alcohol-free no longer means flavor-free. Wafilin Systems helps wineries and cider producers create refined, full-bodied drinks while maintaining aroma and character and offers pilot testing to explore the perfect balance between taste and technology.

Benefits for the wine and cider industry

  • Preserves aroma and flavor – gentle processing protects delicate fruit notes.
  • Low-temperature operation – no heat impact on color or structure.
  • Consistent quality – precise control for stable, repeatable results.
  • Energy efficient – minimal water and energy use for sustainable operation.

FAQ

How long do the membranes last?

Membrane lifetime depends on product type and operating conditions, but typically ranges from 2 to 5 years* with proper cleaning and maintenance. Wafilin Systems designs each installation for optimal durability and easy membrane replacement when needed and offer additional services to expand the lifespan.

Is it more efficient then distillation?

Yes. Membrane dealcoholization is significantly more energy-efficient than thermal distillation because it operates at low temperatures and does not require alcohol evaporation. It also better preserves the product’s natural aroma and taste.

Can the system be integrated into an existing production line?

Yes. Wafilin’s systems are designed for easy integration into existing brewery or winery setups. They can operate as a standalone unit or be connected to upstream and downstream processes such as filtration, carbonation, or pasteurization.

Does dealcoholization affect the product’s shelf life?

No. When processed under controlled, low-temperature conditions, the shelf life of beer and wine remains comparableto that of the original product. Membrane dealcoholization preserves the product’s microbiological stability and prevents oxidation, ensuring consistent quality over time.

Is there any waste from dealcoholization?

A small alcohol-rich permeate stream is produced during the process. This stream can be collected and reused, for example in other production steps or for industrial alcohol recovery. The process itself produces no harmful by-products.

Does it use more water?

No. The process uses minimal water, mainly for system flushing and cleaning. Compared to conventional methods, membrane filtration requires far less cooling or process water, making it a more sustainable choice.
